ARRLの機関紙QSTのバックナンバーを眺めていたら
今年の７月号でARRL-Chef Operating Officer/QST Publisher のWJ1B Harold KramerさんがInside HQというコラムでコンテストについてこんなことを書かれています。
私が普段思っているコンテストの事、クラブのこと、公開運用のことが凝縮されています。
JARLのHQや理事からこの様な言葉がJARLニュース等で発信されればJARLへのイメージも変わるだろうな～
もちろんコンテストをやらない方からみると「コンテストは毎週末煩い」との意見もあるでしょうし、コンテストやクラブの活動（コンテスト参加）をやっている側から見ている思いでしょ言われれば、それも少々あるかもしれませんが、書かれている通りだと思います。
（日本の公開運用や記念局の運用の実態は少し異なるかな？）
Benefits of Contesting and Operating Events
Contests and operating events generate on-air activity that benefits all of Amateur Radio by demonstrating continued use of radio spectrum and advancing the art and science of radio.
Contesters are leaders in antenna design, station control, transcerver perfomance, software development, and propagation knowledg. They keep their operating skills sharp, their technical knowledge current, and their stations operating efficiently.
While it can be highly competitive, there's camaraderie and social aspect to contesting as well. Having done it my self, operating a multioperator contest station is a lot of fun, and it's a great way to meet other hams and share contesting knowledge. Contest clubs are some of the largest and most active of the ARRL affilated Clubs. Contesting and international operating events also promote and encourage international goodwill.
