‘Yosakoi’means ‘let the good times roll’.
The dance paeforemance Yosakoi in Kochi is one of Japan’s 10 largest festivals. It has been held for more than 60 years as a summer pastime for people in Kochi. Dancers carry the “naruko” wooden clappers and gyrate their hips.
Every team is free to arrange its own style of music from Japanese ballad to big-Afro funk, but it must include at least part of the festival’s official song, the “Yosakoi Naruko Dance”.
This kind of free-and-easy style might be frowned upon in other Japanese cities.
