The life of mountain village was so poor , it appeared in the bodies of the children .
Even when they became junior high school students , they were about 4th grade elementary school students , but they were still good , there was a girl whose backbone had been bent .
She was washing vegetables in a stream running down the mountain slope .
She answered kindly when I asked the way to my temple , her eyes expressed her kindness ,
" It is like the eye of Kannon ."
I can remember it was it as yesterday .
山国の生活は貧しく、それは子供たちの身体にあらわれていた、中学生になっても小学４年生ぐらいの身体の子供が多かった、それでも五体満足なら、まだ幸福だった、背骨の曲がってしまった少女がいた。
当時の私は、ヒマがあると山間の道をフラフラと歩く習慣があった、
「あの坂を越えたら ちがった世界に行ける」
「あの道を曲がると 安らかな世界が待っている」
帰る道が分からなくなってしまった、その少女が、山の斜面の小川で野菜を洗っていた、道を聞くと親切に教えてくれた、心配そうな表情、そして実に深い思いやりにあふれた目をした、自分がそんなひどい境遇なのに、こんなにも深く思いやることができる、
「これが 観世音菩薩の眼（まなこ）なのか」
何十年も昔なのに、昨日のことのように思いだされる。
