●住んでみてわかる「春」
ここ数日、日本から桜便りが届いています。
桜が大好きな私は、日本では時を惜しんで
一人でも花見に足を運んでいたものです。
その私が今いるのはトロムソ、
ノルウェーの北部、北緯６９度・北極圏の町です。
もちろん、桜はありません。
雪の中でも新芽が吹き、凍っていた川が解ける。
これは想像していたことでした。
しかし、住んでみてわかる春があるものです。
From Japan, I have received news about the cherry blossom these days.
I love cherry blossom so I used to go watching it as often as possible.
Now I am in Tromso which is a town in northern Norway, in the arctic, at lat.69°.
Of course here is no cherry tree.
I had imagined that the buds grow and the frozen river melt even in snow.
But I found other spring signs while living here.
●あられも積もるんだあ！
春といえども、雪はよく降ります。
ある日は、雪がいつもと違うので、
よく見てみると「あられ」です。
まさにお茶漬けに入っている「あられ」。
あられがコロコロしたまま積もっていくのです。
あられも、春のしるし。
Even in spring, it is snowing a lot.
One day I found strange snow called “hailstones”.
It is very similar to Arare, Japanese cake.
Hailstones pile up while keeping their shape.
Hailstones are often seen in spring.
●路上をながれる川！
暖かい日には雨が降ります。
そう、雪ではなく、雨。
すると、雪が解けるのも早い。
雨が止んでも雪は解け、
坂の多いトロムソの路上を流れます。
まるで川のように。
これも、春にしか見れない光景でしょう。
It rains on warm days, instead of snowing.
Then the old snow melts faster.
After the rain stops, the snow melts and runs down the slopes Tromso has a lot of.
It’s like rivers.
It’s also a scenery we can watch only in spring.
●太陽が、高い！速い！
さらに雪解けを手伝うのが、太陽の熱。
一週間雪が降った後、突然現れた太陽の位置に驚きました。
一週間前より、うんと高い。
それもそのはず、５月半ばには白夜になるのですから。
And what helps snow to melt is the heat of the sun.
I was surprised about the position of the sun which suddenly appeared after it had been snowing for a week.
It was higher than the week before.
That is why the midnight sun will be here in the middle of May.

●鳥のさえずりが日に日に増える。
耳をすまして聞こえていた鳥のさえずりが、
今では、朝目覚めると、必ず聞こえてきます。
違う鳴き方が、日に日に増えてくるようにも感じます。
一体何を歌っているのでしょうねえ。
I could just about hear the birds singing earlier,
but now I hear them easily when I wake up in the morning.
I have the feeling that the types of birdsong are increasing day by day.
What song are they singing?
●イースターのお休みには、スキー！
春の雪を歓迎している人たちもいるんですよ。
イエスキリストの復活をお祝いする「イースター祭」はここでもあり、
仕事も学校も約一週間お休みになります。
そして、今がスキーをするのにいい季節。
彼らは、イースターのお休みにスキーをするのを楽しみにしているのです。
私もです！
Some people here welcome snow in spring.
There is the Easter festival here and Easter holidays for about a week for school and work.
And it’s a good season for skiing now.
They are looking forward to skiing during the Easter holidays. Me too!
●桜を思い出せるからこそ
私はトロムソにいながら、
桜の木のすぐそばにいるように、
木のたたずまい、花の香、風に舞う花びらを思い出すことができます。
これが、どんなに私を支えてくれることか。
I can imagine the scent of blossoming and fluttering petals
as if I were nearby a cherry tree, even though I’m in Tromso.
That encourages me very much.
だから、私は思うのです。
ここの春を存分に楽しもう、と。
今、また雪がちらついてきました。
So I think
that I will enjoy spring here as much as possible.
Now it began to snow again.
