実家近くの山寺はいいところだ the Zen temple near my family's house

正月に里帰りしたとき、親と一緒に近所の山寺に年始のご挨拶に行った。
When I stayed in my hometown during the New Year's holidays,
I visited with my parents a nearby zen temple on the hill side surrounded by bamboos and other trees.

うちの両親は、そこの和尚さんや奥さんたちと懇意にしているのだ。
そのおかげかどうかはわからないが（初めて寺を訪問したという人々も同席していたので）、
お茶とお茶菓子から始まって、日本酒や肴の接待を受けることができた。
私は日本酒が好きではないので（酒飲みにあるまじきことだが）、
「ビールが飲みたい」と主張してみたら、もちろん出てきた。
日本のお寺って、素晴らしい。（あそこだけ？）
これで猫がいたら完璧なのだが・・・
My parents are friends of the monk and his wife.
And so, we were warmly welcomed and offered some tea, sweets, sake(Japanese rice wine) and food.
When I dared to ask beer (because I don't like sake), They offered it naturally.
How wonderful...if only there were some lovely Japanese cats...

日当たりの良い別棟で、美人の奥さんがまずお茶を出してくれた。
the beautiful wife of the monk prepared for us a cup of Matcha (powdered green tea whipped in hot water) and a sweet.



お茶の後は別室でお酒をいただいた。お茶も肴も全て美味しかった。さすがお寺だ。
after tea, sake and food. Everything was delicious.



このお猪口には仕掛けがあって、縁の穴に口を当てて吹くと、笛のように音が鳴る。
this small cup for sake is a bit special. You can whistle it through the hole on the edge



徳利のほうは、注ぐと音が鳴る。風流だ。さすがお寺だ。（外国人にように、いちいち感心する私）
This pot for Sake is also special; it makes sound like a whistle when you por sake from it.

The monk is very nice and friendly



お酒をいただいている時に、せっかくの機会だからと、仏教とはなんぞやと和尚さんに質問してみたら、
色々と興味深い話をしてくれたのだが、残念ながら大方忘れてしまった。年のせいか飲み過ぎのせいか・・・
また次回会った時に、ちゃんと聞いてメモしなきゃ～
I asked the monk about Buddhism while drinking sake and beer,
and he gave his view of Buddhism in Japan.
His explanation was very interesting for me,
but unfortunately I forgot almost all of his answer.
Next time I'll have to write down what he says..

正月に実家に里帰り The New Year’s holidays in my hometown

遅くなりましたが、新年明けましておめでとうございます。
このブログ、更新できる時しか更新できませんが（当たり前や）、今年もよろしくお願いします。
Happy New Year for everyone (it's a bit too late, though)
Maybe I don't write so often, but I'll do so as much as I can.



年末年始にかけて、京都のすみっこのへんにある実家に里帰りした時に撮った写真を載せます。
東京近郊から久しぶりに帰ってみると、その田舎っぷりが新鮮に感じられた・・・やっぱり田舎は落ち着くなあ。
During the new year's holidays I stayed in my parents' house in a countryside of Kyoto.
It's a very small town, very tranquil and peaceful.




八重葎しげれる実家の庭、ゆずの木が生えている。
Our garden is full of weeds. There is a citron tree. We use its fruits for adding flavor to food.



お節は生協で買ったやつ（たぶん）プラス、母が作った高野豆腐の煮物など。
お節って、エビがあると立派に見えるが、エビは剥くのが面倒なので私は食べない。（母が剥いてくれたら食べる・・・いい年して）
"Osechi"( the traditional Japanese New Year foods） They look gorgeous when you put kind of lobsters or big shrimps.
But peeling the shells of lobsters and shrimps seems too much work for me, so I usually avoid eating them.



お雑煮は関西風の白味噌に丸餅が入ったやつ。これは牡蠣やハマグリが入った海鮮バージョン。
"Ozouni"(it's also a traditional Japanese New Year food; a kind of soup containing rice cakes. There are various regional versions)

近所の神社。私は無神論者なので拝まないけど、お寺や神社、モスク、教会などにいると、気持ちが落ち着くから好き。

Even though I'm an atheist, I love visiting worship places like shrines, temples, mosques and churches. I feel peace of mind there.
