◎ あれはバブリーな時代だった。今から１２～１３年ほど前（1900年頃）、上司たちに銀座ポルシェビル内のクラブへ連れて行ってもらったことがある。とても素敵なお店だったけれど、現在はもう営業していない。めったに行けない場所なので、私はいくらか緊張していたような気がする。しばらくすると、大柄のお客３名が店内に入ってきた。プロ野球シーズンを終え、各種タイトルの表彰式があったようだ。
そのために広島から上京して、兄貴分の大野投手が当時は若手であった佐々岡投手と野村選手に、お祝いをかねて連れてきたのだろう。彼らは私の後ろのボックスに座り、ながやかに飲んでいた。
◎ 時折、カラオケのステージを見る振りをして、後ろの席を見ていたら、大野投手がキャスターマイルドを吸っていたのだ。リッチな外国たばこを予測していた私は、その意外さに心打たれた記憶が残っている。今ではベテランの野村選手は、多分、盗塁王か新人王かのタイトルを取り、佐々岡投手は最多勝もしくは勝率、大野投手はセーブ王だったと思う。野村選手は、カラオケを何曲も歌い、見るからにはしゃいでいた。それをニコニコしながら見ていた大野投手は、社会人の軟式野球出身の苦労人らしく、とてもおだやかに水割りを口にし、時折、キャスターマイルドを吸っていた姿に好感が持てた。
彼は今、ＮＨＫサンデースポーツの解説者である。今夜のインタビュー相手は、阪神タイガースの井川慶投手だった。そのやりとりを聞きながら、大野さんは現在でもキャスターマイルドを吸っているのだろうか、と思ったのだ。（2002 04/28）
※ 当時、広島カープは全盛期だった。ここ１０数年はＢクラスを低迷している。しかし、２００７年９月現在、わが阪神タイガースの１１連勝にストップをかけるとともに、今シーズンの勝ち越しを決めたのである。おまけに、昨日も阪神タイガースは敗れたのだ。幸い巨人・中日も負けたので、首位の座は守れたけれど、「どうして、阪神タイガースをいじめるの？」と、つい泣き言をいいたくなってしまう（それにしても、昨日の安倍首相の辞意表明には驚いたね！）。がんばれ阪神タイガース、２２年ぶりの日本一をめざして。（2007/09/13）

Those were bubbly times. About 12-13 years ago (around 1900), my bosses took me to a club in the Ginza Porsche Building.
It was a very nice place, but it is no longer open.
I think I was somewhat nervous because it was a place I rarely went to.
After a while, three large customers came into the shop.
It seemed that there was an award ceremony for various titles after the professional baseball season.
They had come to Tokyo from Hiroshima for that, and their older brother, Ohno, had probably brought them to congratulate Sasaoka and Nomura, who were young pitchers at the time.
They sat in the box behind our and drank longingly.
Occasionally, I pretended to watch the karaoke stage and looked behind our to see that Ohno pitchers were smoking Castor Milds.
I was expecting rich foreign cigarettes, and I still remember being struck by the unexpectedness of it.
Nomura, now a veteran, probably won either the stolen base or rookie of the year titles, Sasaoka the most wins or winning percentage, and Ohno the best saves.
Nomura sang a number of karaoke songs, and was clearly having a great time.
Ohno, who was smiling as he watched, seemed to be a hard worker from a softball team and was very calm as he sipped his water and occasionally smoked a Castor Mild, which was very pleasing.
He is now a commentator on NHK Sunday Sport.
His interview partner tonight was Hanshin Tigers pitcher Kei Igawa.
As I listened to the exchange, I wondered if Mr Ohno still smoked Castor Mild. (2002 04/28)
At the time, the Hiroshima Carp was in its prime. For the last decade or so, they have been languishing in the B class. But as of September 2007, they had snapped our Hanshin Tigers' 11-game winning streak. They have now won the season. On top of that, the Hanshin Tigers lost yesterday as well. Fortunately, the Giants and Chunichi also lost, so we were able to keep our lead at the top of the table, but I kept whining, "Why are you picking on the Hanshin Tigers?" (Yesterday's announcement of Prime Minister Abe's resignation came as a surprise, by the way!) ). (Even so, I was surprised at Prime Minister Abe's resignation yesterday! (2007/09/13)
