たばこの気持ち

先月、ネットニースに投稿されたムツゴロウさんのインタビューの中で、たばこに限った部分の要旨を紹介させていただきます。

I would like to share with you the gist of the portion of the interview with Mr. Mutsugoro that was posted on Net News last month, which is limited to cigarettes, from me.

▼お元気そうで安心しました。

ムツゴロウ:あ、僕はタバコをたくさん吸いますのでそれだけは勘弁してくださいね。フィンランドから運んだヨーロッパアカマツでこの家を作るときもね、タバコの煙が抜けるように作ったんですよ。

ムツゴロウ:僕は喫煙歴60年を超えてますからね、困ったもんだなと思ってます。覚えたのは大学生の頃で、渋谷にできた東急百貨店の2階に洋モクを置いてるタバコ売り場ができまして、それを1本ずつ味わいながら吸いましたね。今はタバコが目の敵にされることが多くって、いっそこんな世の中なら早いことおさらばしようかと思う時さえありますよ（笑）。

▼心臓の病気などもされていますが、禁煙しようと思われたことはあるのですか？

ムツゴロウ:ありませんね。82歳でドクターヘリで搬送されて入院したときも、病室の窓から上半身を外側に乗り出してタバコを吸っていたらすぐにナースが飛んできて、僕は「上半身は病院の外だよ」って説明したけど通じなくて怒られました。今度同じことをしたら病院を出ていってください、とね。

Mutsugoro: Oh, I smoke a lot, so please don't let that stop me. When I built this house with European red pine that I brought from Finland, I made it so that the cigarette smoke would escape.

Mutsugoro: I've been smoking for over 60 years, so I think I'm in trouble. I first learned to smoke when I was a university student, when a tobacco shop with Western-style cigarettes was opened on the second floor of the new Tokyu Department Store in Shibuya, and I smoked while savoring each cigarette. Nowadays, cigarettes are often seen as an enemy of cigarettes, and sometimes I even think about getting rid of them as soon as possible in such a world (laughs).

(Laughs) You have a history of heart disease, but have you ever thought about quitting smoking?

Mutsukoro: No. When I was hospitalized by a helicopter at the age of 82, I was smoking a cigarette with my upper body leaning out of the window of my hospital room, and the nurse immediately flew to me. If you do the same thing again, please leave the hospital, she said.
