わたくしは巻煙草も金口のウエストミンスターにマッチの火をつけ、薫（かおり）だけでもかいでおけと云わぬばかり、烟（けむり）を交番の中へ吹き散らして足のおもむくまま言問橋の方へ歩いて行った。
［ken］301～304ページは、警察官から職務質問されている様子が描かれています。警察とたばことのつながりで言えば、私が19歳のとき、千葉県市川市の同級生を訪ね道がわからなかったので、駅前の交番に立ち寄ったあげく、胸ポケットのまだ2本ぐらいしか吸っていないハイライトをゴミ箱に捨てさせられたことがあります。「道順はわかりましたか。ところで君は絶対に未成年ですよね。今回、調書は取りませんし、親御さんにも連絡しませんが、ここのごみ箱へ捨てていきなさい。」と厳命されました。
「いや、私は二十歳を過ぎています。親の仕送りで買った物だから、捨てるのも嫌です。」「ならば身分証明書を見せなさい。」などの押し問答はありましたが、結局、警察官の言うとおりにハイライトの箱をギュッと押しつぶし、交番のごみ箱に捨ててきたのです。しゃくにさわる苦い記憶で、職務質問をされた後、交番内にたばこの煙を吹き散らした永井荷風さんの気持ちが理解できました。
