On November 23rd of last year, I finally finished reading Kanazawa Harutomo's book (my fifth, "Kokufu Hakuu Ninety Years of Black Wind and White Rain").
I learned that money earned from the konjac of Hanawa-cho and Yamatsuri-cho was used to support loyalists in the Mito domain, and that Yamatsuri-cho in particular developed as a shipping base for konjac, a position it continues to hold to this day.
In addition, Kanazawa Harutomo's wife (Aiko) secretly wrote many tanka poems while living with her husband, who was often away.
After Aiko's death, her husband, the author, faced the tanka and published it as "Yamakura no Hana."
I would like to introduce some tanka poems from the collection that moved me.
・Pulled out of the rough soil, the butterbur sprouts fly about, blue and clear in the sunlight.
・Summer mountains are also interesting, their shadows cast on the Okukuji River during the Arrow Festival.
・Even if they are not poems to be shown to the public, every moment of them touches my heart.
・Swaying and climbing, the morning frost is white, I go to tread on the wheat.
・Before I knew it, I had gotten used to using the hoe, and I felt like I was destined to be a farmer.
・Behind the scenes, We trample the wheat, side by side, walking side by side, so intimate
・The snow dawns, the new year comes, but my husband is not there, so I spend a snowy day holed up in the kotatsu
・Not realizing that the summer night is turning, I compose songs, there is no one to bother me, so I sing
・How many years have I served my stubborn husband, and have I grown old enough to no longer oppose him?
・We share the same talents and hobbies, and as a married couple, who would have thought we would continue to argue?
Kanazawa Harutomo's wife would visit Osaragi Jiro's home in Kamakura, where her husband had stayed many times, and she and her husband would watch plays based on Osaragi Jiro's original works at the Kabuki-za, and she gave Osaragi Jiro a warm welcome when he visited their home in Hanawa-cho.
After Aiko passed away, there is a photograph of Osaragi Jiro visiting Hanawa-cho and laying lilies at her grave.
Although Aiko grew up as a young lady from Mito and married Kanazawa Harutomo, she served as a village council member, mayor of Tsunetoyo, and mayor of Hanawa-cho, and supported the local historian who traveled all over Fukushima Prefecture and even to far-flung places, and I imagine the hardships she endured were no mean feat.
