Halloween is a fun and popular holiday in America.
Kids especially love it, but even adults enjoy it a lot.
Halloween is a combination of several different holidays from Rome, England,
and Ireland.
The various traditions associated with those older holidays gradually
became modern day Halloween.
Children dress in scary (or funny costumes) so that the spirits will think
they are ghosts, also, and leave them alone.
People carve scary faces or images into pumpkins to frighten evil spirits and
keep them away from their homes.
Also, an ancient practice in England was to leave food or wine outside your home,
for wandering spirits.
So, children go "trick-or-treating" now to immitate wandering spirits
looking for food or treats (candy).
Many adults have costume parties and dress up in costumes, eat,
and drink with friends.
They also decorate their homes with scary ornaments and lights.
Because of this, it's a holiday everyone can enjoy.
