nurse「看護婦」にあるnurはもともと〈授乳する〉という意味で、nursery school「保育園」などに見られる。このnurが二重母音化し、nour となってnourish「育てる、栄養を与える」となった。ちなみに、「栄養」という単語 nutrition も nur から派生した語である。
