Introduction on the Kintai Bridge
Location: Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture,
in the western part of Japan
Structure:Five arches type made from wood Piers
Crosses:The Nishiki River
Bridge specs: About 190 m long (210 yd.),
Each 5 m (5.5 yd.) wide,
9.5 m (10.5 yd.) high
Spanning Aprox.35 m (38 yd.).
Chronology :
1673 Constructed designed by Kurozaemon Kodama
1674 Two piers carried away by flooding, reconstructed next year.
1950 Bridge is destroyed due to flooding caused by typhoon Kijia.
1953 Bridge is carefully reconstructed with scour protection and
concrete cores for the piers.
2004 Bidge are reconstructed after 3 years construction terms
The piers are not rebuild
Seasonal viewing spot and recommend events:
Today the bridge is illuminated at night, and it is a great spot
for viewing the cherry blossoms in the spring, the changing
leaves in the autumn, and cormorant fishing in the summer.
