ジョン・アーヴィング／The Hotel New Hampshire

以前からよく平積みでも見かけるので、ずっと気になっていた１冊。けれど実際に読んでみると、途中で何度も読むのをやめようと思い、結局読むのをやめてしまった本。

内容がどうこうではなく、筋立てがあまりにもドタバタ。恐らくこの調子で最後まで行くのだろうと先が見えてしまい、後半1/3を残してついに挫折。唯一書き抜いたのはこのくだり。

we were all on a big ship.... in spite of the danger of being swept away, at any time, or perhaps because of the danger, we were not allowed to be depressed or unhappy.... the way the world worked -- which was badly -- was just a strong incentive to live purposefully, and to be determined about living well.

こういう話は映画とかで観た方が面白いのかも知れません。
