母の留袖 Mother's Tomesode

箪笥に眠っていた留袖を起こしました。「出番ですよ～！」

しかし・・・
じぇれまいあは自分で着物を着ることができません恥。
それで洋裁が得意な叔母（プロ！）にドレスに仕立てて下さいとおねだり。
（はい。じぇれまいあの得意技はおねだりすりすり～ごろにゃーん）　
I "woke" this tomesode that has been sleeping for more than a quarter of a century(!) in my mother's chest of drawers.
Kuro(black) tomesode is a very formal kimono with family crests in 5 places(one on each sleeve, one on each shoulder and one in the neck), and are often worn for wedding ceremonies by married female relatives of the bride or groom.
I wanted my mother to be at her granddaughters wedding (how she would have loved to do so), but it is not going to be.
So I went to her house and found this beautiful kimono. I asked my aunt (my mother's younger sister, who can make dresses) if she could undo the kimono and make it into a dress.
She thought it was a good idea and said she could and would.

ドレスになる前の着物も残しておきたくて書いています。
I would like to remember mother's kimono as it is, before made into a dress.

模様は水辺です。流水柄は「悪い事を水に流す」の意味を持ち、また、流水は腐らないところから「清らか」「正義」などの意味をも表すそうです。
The pattern is that of a "waterfront". Water means "wash away bad/evil things"
Also, because running water doesn't go bad, it can also mean "purity" and "justice".
I thought it interesting, because there is a quote in English, too.
'Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an everlasting stream'

これはオシドリ（鴛鴦）ですね。

鴛鴦の契（えんおうのちぎり）という言葉もあります。
オシドリは雄と雌とがいつも一緒にいるので仲の良い夫婦のことを「おしどり夫婦」なんて言いますよね。
鴛鴦の絵柄は吉祥文様（きっしょうもんよう）だそうで縁起が良く祝いの席に好まれるそうです。　結婚式にピッタリの柄ですわ。
Mandarin ducks signify love between man and wife.
Come to think of it, she must have this kimono made for weddings.
She couldn't have worn this kimono more than a few times.

菊も縁起が良い模様だそうです。

（菊が）漢方薬としても用いられたことから不老長寿や無病息災を意味したりもするんですって。
chrysanthemums are also auspicious pattern, and because they were used as a herbal remedy, the motif signifies "longevity" and "good health".

このツンツンとしている植物が分からないのですが、葦？
そういえば葦と書いて「あし」と読んだり「よし」と読んだりするのが不思議でしたが同じものを指しているんですってね。
あしは「悪し」に通じるってんで「善し」と読むようになったんですと。
「するめ」を「あたりめ」と言うが如し

でも葦ではなさそうです。　調べたところ「木賊（とくさ）」のようです。
摘んでもすぐ伸びてくることから、復活　向上　昇進などの意味を持ち、祝い事時の和装に使われるとのこと。

ほぉ～。　着物の柄って美しいだけでなく、意味がこめられているんですね。
