politeness here in Japan（礼儀正しい日本）

アメリカ人の友人Jimの、FBへの今日の投稿です。

"OK, so I got on the train at Shibuya and had 5 minutes before it left.
I was reading something when all of a sudden I heard a voice.
i looked up and it was this guy in a yellow jacket. He was doing janitorial
like work on the trains. He got on the car I was on at the other end,
stood in the middle of the aisle, faced us all, bowed and said
"Thank you very much." He then proceeded to walk through the car
looking for trash and other dirt on the floor.
When he got to the end of the car,he again turned around,
faced everyone, bowed, and said thank you before he left the car.
He then proceeded to the next car and did the same thing.
I got a picture of him bowing in the next car before he began his work.
But I am continually amazed at the level of politeness here in Japan!"

”渋谷で電車に乗った時のこと、
黄色の服を着た鉄道管理会社の作業員のような人が乗って来た。
その人は乗客に向かってお辞儀をし、ありがとうございますと言って
ゴミなどを探しながら車内を歩いた。
その車両を終わると再び皆に向かってお辞儀をし、
ありがとうございましたと言って降りて行った。
彼が次の車両に行って同じことを始めた時、ぼくは思わずその姿を撮った。
日本でのこういった礼儀正しさに、今も驚かずにはいられないのだ。”

要約すると、こんなような意味です。
読んで確かにと納得し、そして嬉しく思いました。
少しばかり海外を旅行すると、日本の鉄道の正確無比さ、車内の清潔さ、
そして乗務員の態度のよさにつくづく感謝したくなります。
いかに多くの国で、時刻表が守られないことか。
15分、20分遅れなど当たり前、ようやく走り出しても
途中で突然止まってしまって1時間も待たされたり。
そして乗務員に説明を求めようとしても、謝ることなどまずなく、
自分の管轄じゃないと言うばかり。
そして車内には空き缶や菓子袋が散らばっていたりする。
到着が1分遅れたからといって丁寧に謝ってくれる、
あるいは御礼を言いながら掃除してくれる鉄道会社なんて
日本以外に私は知りません。

日本の鉄道の素晴らしさ、そしてそのことに改めて気づかせてくれた
Jimに感謝です。
