An exhibition of Shinto religious art opened at the Cleveland Museum of Art Tuesday.
It features 125 pieces, including folding screens and sculpture from the 8th century through the 19th century. It was curated from U.S. and Japanese museums as well as shrines across Japan.
A sculpture of a seated deity from a shrine in the old Japanese capital of Nara is among the exhibits. It's designated as a national important cultural property and is on loan outside Japan for the first time.
(Sinead Vilbar / Curator, Cleveland Museum of Art)
"The deep level of thought that went into producing these works of art ... I think when we encounter that, we can only have tremendous respect for the artist who created them."
Experts say it's the first time in 40 years that an exhibition of exclusively Shinto religious art has been held in the U.S.
