陳成子弑簡公、孔子沐浴而朝、告於哀公曰、陳恆弑其君、請討之、公曰、告夫三子、孔子曰、以吾從大夫之後、不敢不告也、君曰、告夫三子者、之三子告、不可、孔子曰、以吾從大夫之後、不敢不告也。
【書き下し文】
陳成子(ちんせいし)、簡公(かんこう)を弑(しい)す。孔子、沐浴して朝(ちょう)し、哀公(あいこう)に告げて曰わく、陳恒(ちんこう)、其の君を弑す。請う、これを討たん。公曰わく、夫(か)の三子(さんし)に告げよ。孔子曰わく、吾(われ)大夫の後(しりえ)に従えるを以て、敢(あえ)て告げずんばあらざるなり。君曰わく、夫の三子者(さんししゃ)に告げよと。三子に之(ゆ)きて告ぐ。可(き)かず。孔子曰わく、吾大夫の後に従えるを以て、敢て告げずんばあらざるなり。
【現代語訳】
陳成子(ちんせいし)が主君である斉の簡公(かんこう)を殺害しました。
孔子は沐浴した後に宮殿に上がって魯の哀公(あいこう)に言いました、
「陳恒(ちんこう：陳成子の事)が主君を殺害しました。どうかこの無道者をお討ち取り下さい。」
哀公は、
「御三家の当主たちに聞け。」
と答えました。孔子は退出した後でつぶやいて言いました、
「大臣の末席にいる者として、哀公に申し上げずにはいられなかったのだ。しかし "御三家の当主に聞け" とおっしゃるとは。」
そして御三家の当主たちに会って陳成子の討伐を進言しましたが、彼らは却下しました。
孔子は、
「大臣の末席にいる者として、大義をもって正論を言わずにはいられなかったのだ。」
とおっしゃいました。
【English】
Chen Cheng Zi murdered marquis Jian of Qi. Confucius bathed and went to the palace and said to marquis Ai of Lu, "Chen Heng murdered his lord. Let us punish him, Your Excellency." Marquis Ai replied, "Talk to the heads of three families." Confucius left the palace and said, "As duty of a minister, I dared tell it to marquis Ai. But he said, 'Talk to the heads of three families.'" Confucius proposed punishing Chen Heng to the three ministers. But they denied. Confucius said, "As duty of a minister, I dared tell it."
『論語』とは
読んで字の如く「論じ語る」、孔子と弟子達や要人達との間に交された対話録。
『論語』は私たちの生き方の原点を見つめた思索の宝庫であり、人間性を磨く叡智が凝縮した永遠の古典。
読めば読むほど胸に深く沁み込む簡潔な言葉の数々。
『孟子』『大学』『中庸』と併せて儒教における「四書」の一つに数えられる。
全20編（学而第一～堯曰第二十） 構成され、編の名称は各編の最初の二文字を採ったものであり内容上の意味はない。
したがって、学而第一から順に読む必要はなくどこから読んでもかまわない。
