A generation of workers under stress. Lack of sleep is becoming an increasingly serious problem in Japan. A government study shows that about half of Japanese people in their 40s say they get less than six hours of sleep a day.
Last November, the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry asked about 6,500 men and women aged 20 or older about their sleeping habits.
The biggest concern is those in their 40s. 48.5 percent of the men and 52.4 percent of the women indicated that they sleep less than six hours daily. And about 10 percent from both sexes say they don't even get five hours.
Since 2009, more and more Japanese people have been complaining they don't get enough rest. Officials warn that sleep deprivation can cause mental illness, obesity, hypertension, and other health issues.
