BURNT, BE[GET] BURNED

この表現があった。
　
Peter, Randy, MJ, and Maia pack up their things and walk out of the classroom. Peter hears Alice Tam shout back to Flash as they’re leaving, “DANG, FLASH, YOU WANT SOME ALOE? BECAUSE YOU LOOK BURNT.”
Peter wonders if he can pull a muscle smiling.
　ピーター、ランディ、MJ、マイアは荷物をまとめて教室を出る。4人で出ていく時に、アリス・タムがフラッシュの後ろから大声で呼びかける声をピーターは耳にする。
「やっば、フラッシュ！ アロエいるんじゃん？　ボコボコにやられちゃったね！」
　ピーターは笑いすぎて顔の筋肉が痛くなる。

　本書はジュニアノベルなので、Grade levelは 3歳から7歳となっているが、油断してはいけない。
YOU WANT SOME ALOE? BECAUSE YOU LOOK BURNT.はアメリカの口語表現がわかんらないと理解できない。
　これはかっこつけて登場したFlashがMJとMaiaにきびしく言い返されて「ぼこぼこにされてしまった」ことをAlice Tamがburntの「日焼け」に引っ掛けて「ずいぶん日焼けしちゃったね（ぼこぼこにされちゃったね）、アロエでケアしないとね」と言っているのだ。
　burntはこのように「日焼けした」以外に、状況によって「言い負かされた、恥をかかされた、バカにされた」 という意味で使われる

2024年の大みそかに続いて、2025年元旦のGetUpEnglishも現在翻訳中のスパイダーマンの小説の1冊から英語の用例を紹介する。

He remembers they’re getting together so MJ can give him some social-media tips later this week and breathes easier.　 Since she hasn’t canceled yet, he figures they’re still on. The other day while he was waiting for the train, he set up a SpiderManEnWhySee account, just a little miffed that he couldn’t include a hyphen in the screen name.
　今週MJに会って、ソーシャルメディアの使い方を教えてもらうはずだったと思い出し、ほっとする。MJからキャンセルの連絡が来てないからこの予定はまだ生きているはずだ。この間、電車を待っているあいだに、〝SpiderManEnWhySee〟というアカウントを作った（スクリーンネームにハイフンを入れられなかったことが少し気に入らなかったけれど）。

　breathe(s) easierは、「安堵する、ほっとする」
　研究社オンラインディクショナリー（KOD）の『リーダーズ英和辞典』には、次のように定義されている。

　breathe (easily [freely]) again＝breathe easy [easier, easily, freely] ほっとする, 安堵する.

　今年もKODはフル活用すること間違いない。

　エレベーターホールに入ると、ランディは迷わず〝FLR 22–37（22階から37階）〟と案内板が表示されたエレベータ機の前に向かう。
