juggernautは、ヒンドゥー教のヴィシュヌ神の8番目の化身であるクリシュナの神の像で、この像を載せた車にひき殺されると極楽往生ができると信じられた。転じて、「強力な軍艦や戦車」、「（制御できないほどの）巨大な組織、強大な勢力、威圧的なもの、抵抗不可能なもの（根強い社会制度･風習など）」の意味で使われる。

先日も「将校成りて万骨枯る」とはどういうことか、という質問があった。
今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現について考えてみよう。
「将校成りて万骨枯る」とはIMIDASに、
「一人の将軍が功績をたてる裏には、戦場で多くの兵士が犠牲となり、屍（しかばね）をさらしているのだ。陰にあって働く多くの無名の人たちを忘れて、功名を一部の指導者に帰することを怒っていう言葉」
とあるから、
まずは「一人の将軍が功績をたてる裏には、戦場で多くの兵士が犠牲となり、屍（しかばね）をさらしている」の意味をdirect meaningとして伝えればよい。

Direct meaning is:
Behind the scenes of one general's accomplishments, many soldiers die on the battlefield, and their corpses are scattered about.

続いて「陰にあって働く多くの無名の人たちを忘れて、功名を一部の指導者に帰することを怒っていう言葉」の日常的な用法を伝えればよい。

joie de vivreはフランス語から入って来た語で、「生きる(ことの)よろこび」。

●Extra Point
副詞jigglyは「ゆさゆさ（した）」であるが、英日翻訳の場合、状況に応じてその「揺れ」の感じを表現する必要がある。
