KURT KLEINMAN: I'm Kurt Kleinman. I was the baby of the family, a family of four children: An older sister, 11 years older, another sister eight years older, and a brother seven years older. So I was the baby of the family, always hovered over by his mother and father. I thought my mother was beautiful and did a lot of things growing up with her, as well as with my father.

JEREMY DRONFIELD: I'm Jeremy Dronfield, the author of "The Boy Who Followed His Father Into Auschwitz." It first came to me when I was asked to get involved with trying to find a publisher for an English translation of Gustav Kleinman's concentration camp diary. I felt the issue with that was that the diary itself--as it was valuable as it is as a historical document--is very difficult to read. Gustav wrote it really for his own benefit rather than as a literary document or a record. So taking it together with various pieces of evidence, including a written memoir written by Fritz and various interviews and other records, I thought that this was a story that really needed to be told. The best way I could serve it was to bring my talents as a writer to it and develop it as a full historical narrative, incorporating all the various sources using the diary as a core. And bringing all research from other various sources.
『アウシュヴィッツの父と息子に』の著者、ジェレミー・ドロンフィールドです。グスタフ・クラインマンの強制収容所での日記の英訳版出版を引き受けてくれる出版社を探してもらえないかと依頼を受けた際に、本書執筆を打診されました。グスタフ・クラインマンの日記そのものは歴史的資料として貴重ですが、決して読みやすいとは言えませんでした。グスタフは文学的な作品や記録として書いたわけではなく、自分のために書き残したからです。そこで息子のフリッツが書いた回顧録のほか、さまざま人たちの話や記録など、あらゆる証拠とあわせて考えてみたところ、この物語が本当に伝える価値があると思いました。わたしにできる最善の方法は、グスタフの日記を核に、さまざまな情報を統合し、ほかの資料の調査結果も盛り込みながら、作家としての能力を注ぎ込んで、歴史的な物語に仕上げることでした。
