今年も英語(www.eigobin.com)にはどれだけおせわになったかわかりません。最近は日英翻訳だけでなく、英文ライティングの仕事がすごく増えているのですが、大事な文章はすべて英語便にチェックしてもらってから提出しています。
先日も、TOEICテストの紹介文を英語便に添削してもらいました。
◯Practical Example
As well as in Part 5, time management is the most important consideration for Part 6. The test takers must use their time wisely. There are four documents and the test takers should answer twelve questions ( three questions for each document). Ideally, test takers who try to get 990 should answer should ideally answer all the questions in five minutes ( one minutes and a half minutes for each document ).
英語便では、以下の色を使って、信用できるネイティブスピーカーが実にわかりやすく説明してくれます。

skidはいろんな意味がある。

動詞では、「（車が）横滑りする、スリップする」の意味で使われる。

"Cars often skid on icy roads."
"Yeah. The guy’s car went into a skid and ended in a ditch."
「車は氷の張った道では滑りやすい」
「ああ、あいつの車は横滑りして、溝に落ちた」
●Extra Point
名詞も同形。そしてbe on the skids で、「落ち目になる」。

"That blues singer is on the skids now."
"Yeah. He's past ninety."
「あのブルースシンガーは落ち目だ」
「ああ。もう90歳過ぎだからな」
形容詞high-handedは、「高圧的な、横暴な、高飛車な」。

「上野とかいうやつは若い奴に威張っているから、独裁者と評された」

much as…は、接続詞で「非常に……だけれども」。
althoughと同じ意味で使われる。

as much as の形で使われることもよくあるようだ。

"As much as she was reluctant to do it, Noriko had to report her boss that Stuart was late again tomorrow."
"I'm sorry she had to do that."
「紀子は気が進まなかったが、上司にスチュアートが今日も遅刻したことを報告しなければならなかった」
「そんなことをしなければならなかったなんて、気の毒に」
back to backは「背中合わせに」であるが、「引き続いて」の意味で使われることもあるので、注意。

wherebyは関係副詞で、「それによって（人・物が）……する［である］」の意味で使われる。
by whichと同じ意味で用いられる。

assertiveは「はっきりと自分を主張する、自信に満ちた、積極的な」。

"Yeah, if you're not assertive enough, others won't listen to you."
「幸、君はもう少し自分を主張したほうがいいね」
「そうだよ、消極的過ぎると、自分を分かってもらえないよ」
●Extra Point
名詞形はassertiveness. 「はっきりと自分を主張すること、断定的なこと、積極性」。状況によっては、いい意味で使われる。
たとえば、就職などで自分を売り込むときなどは、よく次のように書いたりする。

"In addition, I will bring to the position strong writing skill, assertiveness and the ability to encourage others to work cooperatively with the department."
「加えて、この職に対して、わたしは優れたライティング技術と積極性を発揮し、部署のほかの方々と協力して仕事を推進できる能力を備えていると思います」

つづいて、このように続ける。

本日のGetUpEnglishは、12月17日に亡くなったDaniel Inoue(1924- 2012)の真珠湾攻撃50周年の演説を紹介する。

on tapはこの場合「（いつでも）すぐに使える」

「補欠」の意味でも使われる。

動詞outperformは、「（……より）性能がすぐれている」。
