The Empress Masako preparing for her inaugural mission as an international goodwill ambassador

2023-06-18 06:48:49 | News

About twenty years have passed, and with the support of the  Emperor Naruhito, the Empress Masako is now actively involved in various initiatives. She is currently preparing for her inaugural mission as an international goodwill ambassador abroad. Her primary focus revolves around addressing issues that affect children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Additionally, she holds a deep passion for supporting working women.

Agency says BTS members will serve in South Korea’s military

2022-11-03 08:42:50 | News

 https://borneobulletin.com.bn/agency-says-bts-members-will-serve-in-south-koreas-military-2/

The members of K-pop band BTS will serve their mandatory military duties under South Korean law, their management company said yesterday, effectively ending a debate on exempting them because of their artistic accomplishments.

Big Hit Music said the band’s oldest member, Jin, will revoke his request to delay his conscription at the end of the month and undertake the required conscription steps.

The six other members also plan to serve in the military, according to the company’s notice to financial regulators, which it described as management-related information that could possibly affect investment decisions.

Big Hit issued another statement on Twitter, saying the company and BTS members are “looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment”. No further information on the timing of their service was given.

The band members performed together in Busan over the weekend in support of the city’s EXPO bid, but only solo projects appear to be planned until 2025.

The announcement came after commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration Lee Ki Sik told lawmakers this month that it would be “desirable” for BTS members to fulfil their military duties to ensure fairness in the country’s military service.

Whether the BTS members must serve in the army had been a hotly debated issue in South Korea as Jin faced possible enlistment early next year after turning 30 in December.

Under South Korean law, most able-bodied men are required to perform 18-21 months of military service, but special exemptions had been granted for athletes and artists who excel in certain international competitions that have been tied with national prestige.

The climate activists who threw soup over Vincent Van Gogh’s famous “Sunflowers” painting on Saturday appeared in a London court on charges of criminal damages, several outlets reported.

The two women were protesting as part of the campaign group Just Stop Oil, and they pleaded not guilty at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court during two brief hearings.

After dumping two cans of tomato soup over the Van Gogh oil painting Friday, the protesters also glued themselves to the gallery wall. They were removed by specialists and taken into custody, according to the London Metropolitan Police.

A spokesperson for the National Gallery confirmed that there was no damage to the painting, which is one of the iconic versions of “Sunflowers” that Van Gogh painted in the late 1880s. It has an estimated value of $80.99 million.

“There is some minor damage to the frame but the painting is unharmed,” the spokesperson told CNBC. The painting was covered by glass, and it was cleaned and returned to the National Gallery Friday afternoon.

Just Stop Oil has been protesting in London for the past two weeks, and the group said in a press release that its actions were “in response to the government’s inaction on both the cost of living crisis and the climate crisis.”

“What is worth more, art or life? Is it worth more than food? Worth more than justice? Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting or the protection of our planet and people?” one activist said in a video of the event.

Just Stop Oil has received widespread criticism from environmental groups and politicians from the opposition Labour Party following the protest.

“It’s not wrong to be different,” Suga said through an interpreter. “Equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences.” V said that “everyone has their own history.”

“We hope today is one step forward to understanding and respecting each and everyone as a valuable person,” V added.

The most important performance is your last performance or is the next one that’s coming up.

In music, it’s really very simple.  The most important performance is your last performance or is the next one that’s coming up. [...] The frame of music is always [that] you’re trying to give all of yourself at any one time in a performance.

The club's annual popularity rankings came out Tuesday, drawn from more than 800,000 purebred puppies and older pooches that joined the nation's oldest canine registry last year.

 pooch(es):

With 197 recognized breeds, the list ranges from such familiar furry faces as Labs — No. 1 for an unprecedented 31 straight years — to the newly added Biewer terrier (making a strong debut at No. 82) and unusual pups like the hairless Xoloitzcuintli (No. 119).

For dog fans, there's plenty to dig into (like a dachshund, No. 10) and point out (like a pointer, No. 120). So we've rounded up (like a border collie, No. 31) some highlights.

Paul McCartney announces 14-date U.S. tour, first live shows since 2019

Sir Paul McCartney plans to launch a 14-date U.S. concert tour in the Pacific Northwest this spring, marking his first series of live performances since the end of a world tour in 2019, the former Beatle announced on Feb. 28.

The “Got Back” tour will open on April 28 in Spokane, Washington, McCartney’s first show in that city, followed by back-to-back concerts at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on May 2-3, according to the tour schedule posted on his official website.

 back-to-back: 連日の

The tour is slated to stop in 11 more U.S. cities over the following six weeks, wrapping at the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on June 16, two days before McCartney’s 80th birthday.

The McCartney outing is sure to figure as a highlight of the 2022 spring-and-summer arena music scene as recording stars begin to return to live performances after a two-year hiatus forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

McCartney is widely considered one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century in his 1960s Beatles collaboration with the late John Lennon. He was last on the concert circuit with a 39-date world tour that concluded with a sold-out show in July 2019 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

“I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time. I said, I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back,” the musician said in a statement announcing his latest outing, alluding to the Beatles’ 1969 hit “Get Back.”

The writing and recording of the song featured prominently in the “The Beatles: Get Back,” a recently-released documentary film series directed by Peter Jackson that covers the making of the band’s 1970 album “Let It Be.”

The upcoming tour includes McCartney’s first ever shows in three Southern cities - Hollywood, Florida; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He also will be playing in Fort Worth, Texas, for the first time since he appeared there in 1976 with Wings, and in Baltimore for the first time since a 1964 Beatles concert.

Rounding out the Got Back tour are stops in Boston; Los Angeles; Oakland, California; Orlando, Florida; and Syracuse, New York.

All that was left for Hanyu was a go-for-broke shot at the quad axel, a 4 1/2-revolution jump that has never been landed in competition, He came close but couldn't quite hold onto the landing, then fell again on his quad salchow before an emotional finish. "I think I did everything I could,” said Hanyu, who only arrived in the Chinese capital on Feb. 6, two days before competing.

The International Skating Union acknowledged that Hanyu was the first skater to attempt a quad axel in an ISU-sanctioned competition.

Looking crushed as the music died down, Hanyu skated off the rink with his head held high, the crowd still cheering him.

It has been "an honor to be able to share the ice with Hanyu over the years,” Chen said.

"Again, watching him when I was a kid, I never even dreamed that I would be able to have the opportunity to even skate with him.

"So then to be able to compete against him... it's just been a really great honor, and he's in my opinion the greatest skater ever.”

In a medical first, US surgeons transplant pig heart into human patient

2022-01-26 08:31:30 | News

In a medical first, doctors transplanted a pig heart into a patient in a last-ditch effort to save his life and a Maryland hospital said Monday that he's doing well three days after the highly experimental surgery.

While it's too soon to know if the operation really will work, it marks a step in the decades-long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center say the transplant showed that a heart from a genetically modified animal can function in the human body without immediate rejection.

decades-long quest to one day use: いつかは~を使うという数十年にわたる探求

 genetically modified: 遺伝子操作された

The patient, David Bennett, a 57-year-old Maryland handyman, knew there was no guarantee the experiment would work but he was dying, ineligible for a human heart transplant and had no other option, his son told The Associated Press.

It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it's a shot in the dark, but it's my last choice, Bennett said a day before the surgery, according to a statement provided by the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

On Monday, Bennett was breathing on his own while still connected to a heart-lung machine to help his new heart. The next few weeks will be critical as Bennett recovers from the surgery and doctors carefully monitor how his heart is faring.

There's a huge shortage of human organs donated for transplant, driving scientists to try to figure out how to use animal organs instead. Last year, there were just over 3,800 heart transplants in the U.S., a record number, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees the nation's transplant system.

Croatian rescuers are praising a dog who protected his injured owner from freezing high on a snowy mountain, keeping him warm for 13 hours in the dark until he could get medical attention.

“Friendship and love between man and dog know no boundaries,” the county’s mountain rescue service wrote on Twitter Tuesday, with a photo of the dog lying on top of his master on a stretcher.

The accident occurred late on Jan. 1 more than 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) up Mount Velebit, that stretches along Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast. Rescuers say both man and dog — an Alaskan Malamute called North — slipped and fell about 150 meters (500 feet).

The hiker seriously hurt his leg but the dog was uninjured, and used its body heat to keep him warm as temperatures dropped after nightfall and rescuers strove to locate them.

“(North) curled beside him and warmed him with his body,” the rescue service’s post said. “His loyalty didn’t stop even when the rescuers came, he was one of us, guarding his man for 13 hours.”

Toyota took lead over GM in U.S. sales last year

2022-01-17 08:55:16 | News

Toyota took lead over GM in 2021 U.S. sales

Japanese automaker Toyota outsold General Motors in the United States in 2021, marking the first time the Detroit automaker has not led U.S. auto sales for a full year since 1931.

Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States in 2021, compared with 2.218 million for General Motors, the automakers said on Tuesday.

GM’s U.S. sales were down 13 percent for 2021 — and down 43 percent in the fourth quarter — while Toyota was up 10 percent for the year. GM last had lower sales in 2010 at 2.202 million.

For all of 2020, GM’s U.S. sales totaled 2.55 million, compared with Toyota’s 2.11 million and Ford’s 2.04 million.

Last year was marred by a shortage of semiconductors used heavily in vehicles, forcing automakers to focus on their most profitable models.

 (be) marred by: ~に見舞われた

GM said on Tuesday it expects U.S. economic growth will boost U.S. total light-duty vehicle industry sales from around 15 million in 2021 to around 16 million in 2022.

GM has been the largest seller of vehicles in the United States since 1931, when it surpassed Ford, according to data from industry publication Automotive News.

Toyota is not boasting about the accomplishment. Senior Vice President Jack Hollis said the automaker is “grateful” for its loyal customers, but “being No. 1 is never a focus or priority.”

The Japanese automaker does not see it as sustainable that it can retain its U.S. sales lead and had no plans to use the 2021 accomplishment in any kind of advertising, he added. Toyota had been credited by analysts for weathering the chip shortage better than other automakers.

(be) credit by analysts for weathering: ~を乗り切ったことで専門家に評価される。
