TO POKE, TO PROD

　今訳しているSpider-Manの小説に、以下の表現があった。

　So, he pokes at it and he prods, and it’s unlike any kind of metal or rock he’s ever seen, especially since it’s emanating some kind of light as far as he can tell.

　

  最初のhe pokes at it and he prodsを日本語にするのは実はなかなかむずかしいのではないだろうか？　なぜなら、pokeもprodも英和辞典では「突く」と定義されていることが多く、この日本語だけではなかなか区別がつかないからだ。

　こういう時は、例文を確認したほうがよい。

　pokeは『コンパスローズ英和辞典』に、以下の用例がある。

The child poked the frog with a stick. 子供はかえるを棒でつついた.

He poked me in the ribs. 彼は私のわき腹をつついた《注意を引くため》.

　一方、prodは『大英和』には、以下の例文がある。

　

　prod a pig with a stick 豚を棒でつつく.

　これでも十分に区別がつくと思うが、

　pokeは「軽くつつく、ちょんと触れる」という感じで、「ゼリーをつつく、友達に気づいてもらおうと彼／彼女を軽くつついて注意を引く」という感じに対し、

　prodは「ぐいっと押す、強めに突く」「火を棒でかき回す、寝ている人を強めに突いて起こす」という意味になるだろう。

WHAT PEOPLE CALL, WHAT PEOPLE SAY

　英語の定型表現は英語の基本ではないかと本業である本を編集して再確認した。普段英語を読んだり聞いている時によく遭遇する。
　その定型表現のひとつにwhat people say.... がある。Taylor Swiftの2014年の大ヒット曲“Shake It Off”にも実に印象的に使われている。

　最後のwhat people call careerをネットで調べていたところ、おそろしいサイトに遭遇した。

20世紀英国を代表する怪奇譚作家ロバート・エイクマン（1914-81)の作品と翻訳について論じているページだが、次の記述があった。

訳文　職業を訊かれるたびにファーンはためらった。どんな答え方をしてもわだかまりが残った。
原文 One thing it plainly did was hold Fern back in what people called his career. Here it did damage in several different ways.
（試訳　それが及ぼす明らかな影響を一つ挙げるなら、ファーンにとっていわゆる立身出世というやつの妨げになるという事だった。その悪影響の現れ方はいくつかあった。）what people called his career は「世間の人が俗にキャリアと呼んでいるもの」という名詞句であって「職業は何か」という疑問文ではない。

　よほど英語ができる、少なくともわたしなどより数倍英語ができる人が書いていると思われる。
　そのほかにも興味深い（翻訳者にとってはおそろしい）指摘がいくつかある。
　こんな人に安心してもらえるような訳を作らなければならないと、新年から襟を正したところだ。

RRANK

　prankは「いたずら、わるふざけ」。
