今日のGetUpEnglishは実際にAIで問題を作って解いてみよう。
たとえば、添付したイラストをどう英語で説明したらよいか？
ChatGPTの答えは以下のとおり。

71語だから、分量もぴったりだ。
attentiveは「注意深い、心を集中している」。

「注意深い彼女は、会議中にほかの人が気づかなかった些細なことにも気づいた」
副詞attentivelyはすでにGetUpEnglishで学習した。
drutherは、「好み、自由選択、望み」。
druthersの形で使われる。

本日のGetUpEnglishは現在、鋭意翻訳中のDouglas Wolk, All of the Marvels: An Amazing Voyage into Marvel’s Universe and 27,000 Superhero Comics(2022)の一部を紹介する。
Reading X‑Men comics from the first few years after Claremont’s departure is like listening to one saxophonist after another attempting to play “Chasin’ the Trane”: whether they can convincingly imitate John Coltrane’s sheets of sound or not, they’re tribute acts, repeating a spontaneous invention without the spontaneity that gave it life. It took a solid decade for post-Claremont X‑Men writers to figure out how to stop recapitulating his work and start responding to it. (Devising an approach to X‑Men that doesn’t owe much to Claremont one way or another has never been a realistic option.)

＊「シーツ・オブ・サウンド」（sheets of sound）はジョン・コルトレーン（1926～1967）が発達させたジャズ・サックスの奏法で、複数の音を同時に演奏することで、音が重なり合うような、複雑な多重音を作り出す。コルトレーンの代表曲「チェイシン・ザ・トレーン」（Chasin' the Trane）はシーツ・オブ・サウンドによる代表例として知られる。
とにかく情報量が多い上に、英語もかなり比喩的な表現が多く、日本語にするのに苦労するが、なるべく早く訳了したい。

a little favorのlittleは、日本語の「ちょっと」とか「小さな」とか「ささやかな」と同じような意味で用いられる。実際、それはまったく「ちょっと」でも「小さな」で「ささやかな」お願いではなかったりする。
“Can I ask you a little favor? Lend me 2 million yen. I promise to pay you back someday.”
「ちょっとお願いがあります。200万円ほど貸していただけないでしょうか？ いつか必ずお返ししますから」
このsomeday（いつか）とは一体いつのことか？ これを明確に定義できる言語はまず存在しない。（2006/04/01）

基本的には、毎日の読書、編集業務、翻訳作業、英語学習において気づいたぜひ覚えておきたい英語表現を紹介している。
prodigiousは、「巨大な, 莫大な」「感嘆すべき、驚異的な」。
“His novel achieved prodigious success worldwide.”
「彼の小説は世界中で驚異的な成功を収めた」（2023/10/12）
do byは「…に対して尽くす、…を遇する」。
“He didn't feel the company did right by him, so he decided to look for a new job.”
「彼は会社に正当に扱われていないと感じたので、新しい仕事を探すことにした」（2023/11/17）
scarcely（やっと、かろうじて）がcouldなどの「推量の助動詞」と比較級と合わせて使われる時には注意すること。
“There could scarcely be a better opportunity to showcase your talent than this upcoming audition.”
「今度のオーディション以上に、あなたの才能を披露するよい機会はあり得ない」(2023/07/09)
上杉の専門はアメリカ文学なので、アメリカ文学の「埋もれた」古典も時々紹介している。

日本語ならではの表現も英語にして紹介している。
日本語の慣用句に「取りつく島がない」がある。さて、これはどんな英語にしたらよいだろう。
wouldn't (even) give someone the time of day（今何時かということさえ教えてくれない）という表現が使える。
共同事業をやらないかと彼にもちかけたが、取りつく島もない。
I approached him about the possibility of a joint venture, but he wouldn't even give me the time of day.
『鬼滅の刃』をはじめ、日本のアニメーションのセリフも英語にしたりする。

「日常よく使われる英語表現を毎日紹介します。毎日日本時間の午前9時までに更新します」とTOPページで宣言しているが、最近は更新がどんどん遅れてしまっていて、GetUpEnglishどころか、GoodAfternoonEnglish、GoodEveningEnglish、はてはGoodNightEnglish化してしまっている。

翻訳書は90冊、桐生発祥の講談社からの翻訳書は50冊になる。9月29日、荒木恵司市長を表敬訪問し、講談社の本を贈って歓談した。

副詞intrinsicallyは「本質的に、本来」。

この本に次の表現があった。
But the plan for which all her friends have died is a failure.
whichは当然the planを指すから、for which all her friends have diedで「その計画に対して彼女の友人たちが死んだ」ということ。
よって、「その計画のために彼女の友人たちが死んだが、計画は失敗した」という意味になる。
日本語を調整すれば、「仲間が何人か命を落としたにも関わらず、彼女の計画は失敗に終わった」くらいにすればよい。

bangは「強打(の音); 衝撃; バーン(という破裂音), 砲声, 銃声」（リーダーズ）以外に、bangsで「切り下げ前髪、まっすぐに切りそろえた前髪 」の意味で使われる。

動詞walkは自動詞「歩く」の意味で使われるが、他動詞「〈馬･自転車などを〉引いて[押して]歩く」（リーダーズ）の意味でも用いられる。

love way too muchというフレーズは、説明できない感情の強さを表現する時に使われる。たとえば、現在、鋭意翻訳中だが、英語の難易度もオタク度も大変なもので、かなり苦戦を強いられているこの本に、

著者であるわたしが愛してやまない非常にマイナーなミュータントに、ノーガール／マーサ・ヨハンソンがいる。ノーガールは浮遊するガラス瓶の中に存在する脳で、テレパシーを通じてのみ、ほかの者たちとコミュニケーションをはかることができる。『ニューX-メン』」や『スパイダーマン・アンド・X-メン』の何号かに登場し、2010年の『ネーションX 〈2〉』ではソロストーリーも作られた。
ここでlove way too muchは、
loveは動詞で、「愛する、非常に好む」。
wayはここでは副詞で、「非常に、とても」。
too muchは「過度に多くの」「必要以上に」という意で副詞として使われている。
love way too muchを直訳すれば、「必要以上に非常に愛する」となり、合理的な範囲を超えた強い愛着や興味を表現する。実際の意味は「非常に強く愛する、合理的なレベルを超えて強く愛する」といった感じ。
例文を挙げる。
