COPIOUS, LAVISH, ETC.

　英語は同じ語を使うことを嫌う言語だ。特にスピーキングとライティングにおいては、できる限り違う語を使って表現するのが効果的だ。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの問題を考えてみよう。

　英語で「多い」と言えば、many, much, a lot of... がすぐに思い浮かぶが、「十分な、豊富な」の意味では、

ample, abundant, plentiful, sufficient, generous, copious, lavish, bountiful

などがすぐに出てくるようにしておきたい。

　たとえばcopious（豊富な）は次のように使われる。

As grim as the scenarios it depicts are, “Dark Reign” was hugely entertaining at the time of its publication, and it’s remained so as the American political landscape has grown bleaker. It feels like a pointed satire of what the nation would become a decade later; its writers weren’t clairvoyant, exactly, but they had a very good handle on the way far-right politics were already using media.

「ダーク・レイン」は内容こそ残酷できびしいものだが、発売当時は非常に面白いコミックとして受け止められたし、アメリカの政治状況がますます暗くなってしまった今も評価が落ちることはない。まるで10年後のアメリカを風刺しているように思える。原作者たちはもちろん予知能力があるわけではないが、極右政党がすでにメディアをいかに巧みに利用していたか、この時点でよくわかっていた。　

　過去形の中に過去完了形が使われているのであれば、そこで時間の差が表現されているので、「すでに～だった」といった言い方をうまく入れればよい。
