A firm that matches freelance workers with employers carried out the research in February. Lancers estimates that nearly seven-and-a-half million people are moonlighting. The figure has risen by more than two million in the past three years.
Nearly 1.7 million people are writing online articles or entering data in addition to their main jobs. About 1.4 million are doing sales or planning work.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet is promoting work-style reform. Companies are being encouraged to allow their full-time employees to have side jobs.
