Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have decided the torch relay will start in Fukushima Prefecture, a region hit hard by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster.
The Olympic organizing committee announced the route on Thursday. The torch will set off in Fukushima on March 26th, 2020. Thousands of runners will then carry the flame through each of Japan's 47 prefectures, from Okinawa in the south to Hokkaido in the north. The 121-day journey will end in Tokyo on July 24th as the Games begin.
Residents in Fukushima welcomed the news.

"I want to show people all over the world how much we have recovered from the disaster."
Fukushima was one of the worst-hit areas in the 2011 disasters. Organizers hope the torch relay will become a symbol of Japan's recovery efforts.
