Two of Japan's favorite things, vending machines and bento boxed lunches, have come together in a new delivery service. The innovation, cooked up by a couple of firms, allows office workers to order their midday meal with a single push of a button.
The service is the brainchild of drinks maker Suntory and online gourmet guide Gurunavi. They came up with a vending machine that transmits orders directly to a nearby restaurant. Customers have to order between 8 and 10 AM to ensure their food arrives by noon. They also get a discount on drinks from the same machine.
The service is currently limited to parts of Tokyo. But the firms hope to have 1,000 of the machines in operation across Japan by 2020.
