Readers of a major U.S. travel magazine have weighed in on the best places around the world to visit. And they've chosen Kyoto in western Japan as the top spot for the second consecutive year.
Travel and Leisure announced on Tuesday a list of the top 10 destinations. The magazine's website notes the Japanese city was the ancient capital for more than 1,000 years and preserves Imperial history. It points out Kyoto has more than 2,000 temples and shrines.
Charleston, which is the oldest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, comes second. Siem Reap in Cambodia, where the Angkor Wat temple complex is located, took third spot, and the Italian cities of Florence and Rome rounded out the top five.
The ranking was decided on the basis of six criteria, including culture and arts, and cuisine.
