The UN says an airstrike by U.S.-led NATO forces on an Afghan hospital may be a war crime. The facility was being run by medical charity Doctors Without Borders, or MSF. Nineteen staff members were killed and 37 people were injured.
MSF officials say the bombing happened early Saturday morning in the northern city of Kunduz. They say all parties involved in the fighting had been informed of the hospital's exact location. And they say the deadly raid continued for more than 30 minutes after American military officials were informed of the situation. Members of the aid group are demanding an explanation and safety for their medical workers.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called the airstrike tragic, inexcusable, and possibly even criminal. U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement that the Department of Defense has launched a full investigation, and he offered his condolences.
