生涯、膨大な数の短篇を遺した山本周五郎。 その大半がいまだに読み継がれ、多くの読者に愛され、また後進の作家たちに多大な影響を与え続けている。
市井に生きる庶民の哀歓、弱き者の意地、男と女の不思議など、特に時代小説に傑作が多く、その数も膨大なものがある。
山本周五郎作品に深く傾倒する沢木耕太郎氏が独自の視点と切り口で4巻36篇を選び、各巻の末尾に斬新かつ詳細な解説エッセイを執筆。
第2巻は「彼らを輝かせるもの」と題して、自らも尾崎四郎から「曲軒」とあだ名された周五郎の作品に登場する男女が貫く「意地」をキーワードに、その作品世界に迫る。
本書の収録作は以下の9篇。

【読んだ理由】

沢木耕太郎氏同様、山本周五郎作品に深く傾倒する一人である。

【最も印象に残った一行】
人が不幸になってゆくということは、単にその人間の問題だけではなく、環境や才能やめぐりあわせなど、いろいろな条件の不調和ということもある－－－－－彼は傷ついた人間だし、私は幸いにして傷ついてはいない。私は自分が無傷でいて、傷ついた人間を突き放すことはできない。それは私にはできないことだ（裏の木戸はあいてあいている）

あの時友達のところへ行く前に、茶を一杯啜るだけでも、考えが変わったかもしれない。堀端を歩くとか、絵を眺めるとか、ほんのちょっと気をしずめてからにすれば、事情は全く変わっていたかもしれません。そうでなくとも、あの少年時代の、後ろからついて来る足音、落ち葉を踏みながらついてきた足音や、友達の云ったあの言葉を思い出すだけでもよかったのです。（橋の下）

山本周五郎全作品を読破したいが、私の年令ではもう無理かもしれないが、挑戦してみよう。

　家にありたき木は、松・桜。松は、五葉もよし。花は、一重なる、よし。八重桜は、奈良の都にのみありけるを、この比ぞ、世に多く成り侍るなる。吉野の花、左近の桜、皆、一重にてこそあれ。八重桜は異様のものなり。いとこちたく、ねぢけたり。植ゑずともありなん。遅桜またすさまじ。虫の附きたるもむつかし。梅は、白き・薄紅梅。一重なるが疾く咲きたるも、重なりたる紅梅の匂めでたきも、皆をかし。遅き梅は、桜に咲き合ひて、覚え劣り、気圧れて、枝に萎みつきたる、心うし。「一重なるが、まづ咲きて、散りたるは、心疾く、をかし」とて、京極入道中納言は、なほ、一重梅をなん、軒近く植ゑられたりける。京極の屋の南向むきに、今も二本侍るめり。柳、またをかし。卯月ばかりの若楓、すべて、万の花・紅葉にもまさりてめでたきものなり。橘・桂、いづれも、木はもの古ふり、大きなる、よし。
草は、山吹・藤・杜若・撫子。池には、蓮はちす。秋の草は、荻・薄・桔梗・萩・女郎花・藤袴・紫苑・吾木香・刈萱・竜胆・菊。黄菊も。蔦・葛・朝顔。いづれも、いと高からず、さゝやかなる、墻に繁からぬ、よし。この外ほかの、世に稀まれなるもの、唐めきたる名の聞きにくゝ、花も見馴なれぬなど、いとなつかしからず。
大方、何も珍らしく、ありがたき物は、よからぬ人のもて興ずる物なり。さやうのもの、なくてありなん。

【現代語訳】　　
家に植えたい木は、松と桜。五葉の松も良い。桜の花は一重が良い。「いにしえの奈良の都の八重桜」は、最近、世間に増え過ぎた。吉野山、平安京の桜は、みな一重である。八重桜は邪道で、うねうねとねじ曲がった花を咲かせる。わざわざ庭に植えることもないだろう。遅咲きの桜も、咲き間違えたようで白ける。毛虫まみれで花を咲かせるのも気味が悪い。梅は白とピンクが良い。一重の花が足早に咲き、追って八重咲きの花がルージュを引くように咲くのは嬉しい。遅咲きの梅は、桜のシーズンに重なり、適当にあしらわれ、桜に圧倒されて、情けなく悲惨である。「一重の梅が、最初に咲いて、最初に散っていくのは、見ていて潔く気持ちがよい」と、藤原定家が軒先に植えていた。今でも定家の家の南に二本生えている。それから、柳の木もオツなものだ。初春の楓の若葉は、どんな花や紅葉にも負けないほど煌めいている。橘や桂といった木は年代物で大きいのが良い。
草は、ヤマブキ・フジ・カキツバタ・ナデシコ。池に浮かぶのは、ハチス。秋の草なら、オギ・ススキ・キキョウ・ハギ・オミナエシ・フジバカマ・シオン・ワレモコウ・カルカヤ・リンドウ・シラギク、そして黄色いキク。ツタ・クズ・アサガオ。どれも、伸びきらず、塀に絡まらない方が良い。これ以外の植物で、天然記念物や、外来種風の名前の物や、見たこともない花は、まるで愛でる気にもならない。
どんな物でも、珍品で、入手困難な物は、頭の悪い人がコレクションして喜ぶ物である。そんな物は、無いほうが良い。

◆鎌倉末期の随筆。吉田兼好著。上下2巻，244段からなる。1317年(文保1)から1331年(元弘1)の間に成立したか。その間，幾つかのまとまった段が少しずつ執筆され，それが編集されて現在見るような形態になったと考えられる。それらを通じて一貫した筋はなく，連歌的ともいうべき配列方法がとられている。形式は《枕草子》を模倣しているが，内容は，作者の見聞談，感想，実用知識，有職の心得など多彩であり，仏教の厭世思想を根底にもち，人生論的色彩を濃くしている。

人間は生まれや育ちは問題じゃない。生まれ育ちよりも、いまなにをするか、これからなにをしようとしてるか、といううことが大事なのだ。

汲めども汲めども、尽きることのない井戸水のごとく、たくさんの感動的な作品の前にして読み続けている。
