An injured sea turtle at an aquarium in southwestern Japan is swimming better now with the help of a pair of artificial flippers.
The turtle, named Yu, lost parts of her front flippers after an apparent shark attack. The Suma Aqualife Park in Kobe has been looking after her since 2009.
After a five-year study, researchers from a prosthetics maker and a university developed some high-tech artificial flippers. The tips of the flippers are made of the same kind of rubber that's used for skin diving fins. The rubber flippers are attached to a vest made of a material used for competition swimsuits that reduce drag.

"It looked comfortable."
(Spectator)
"It was swimming quite naturally despite its artificial flippers."
A curator at the aquarium said it was a bit difficult to attach the flippers properly and expressed the hope that Yu would be able to swim in a tank in front of a lot of spectators..
