Internet security experts say scams involving online bank accounts are growing in Japan. The amount of money being stolen is also increasing.
Three cybersecurity firms held a joint briefing in Tokyo. Directors of the companies said about 40,000 computers have been infected with viruses. The programs have stolen passwords of online banking users over the past 15 months.
The officials said cybercriminals are not only targeting individuals. More than 10 banks in Japan have reported illegal transfers from corporate accounts.

"I think cybercrime is likely to increase further. People and firms have to be aware of the risks when they use Internet banking sites, even when measures to prevent such crime are taken."
The National Police Agency says 1,315 illegal transfers from online accounts were reported last year, with total losses of about 14 million dollars..
