Japanese airlines are hoping to launch into a greener future, where jets could zoom the skies powered by fuel made from waste.
Japan Airlines has started a joint project to look into making fuel from the kind of plastic waste tossed aside by businesses and households. Major trading firm Marubeni is also taking part.
The project wants to churn out fuel by processing waste that is too deteriorated or dirty for recycling. The firms will conduct a feasibility study and build an experimental facility in Japan. They say the fuel could be ready by 2025.

All Nippon Airways has also been working to produce fuel using gas from plants.
Airlines around the world have been under huge pressure to curb pollution. Next year, new rules will limit carbon dioxide emissions from international flights.
