【原文】
子曰、君子無所爭、必也射乎、揖譲而升下、而飮、其爭也君子、

【読み下し】
子の曰わく、君子は争う所なし。必ずや射か。揖譲（ゆうじょう）して升（のぼ）り下（くだ）り、而して飲ましむ。其の争いは君子なり。

【通釈】
先生がいわれた、「君子は何事にも争わない。あるとすれば弓争いだろう。［それにしても］会釈し譲り合って登り降りし、さて［競技が終わると勝者が敗者に］酒を飲ませる。その争いは君子的だ」

【English】
The Master said, "The student of virtue has no contentions. If it be said he cannot avoid them, shall this be in archery? But he bows complaisantly to his competitors; thus he ascends the hall, descends, and exacts the forfeit of drinking. In his contention, he is still the Chun-tsze."

『論語』とは、読んで字の如く「論じ語る」、孔子と弟子達や要人達との間に交された対話録。

17・由井（薩多嶺）
蒲原をすぎると山は海に近くせまる。この海が清見潟である。古くは海の干潮の時に海岸ずたいに通った危険なところであったが、明暦元年九月に朝鮮から使節がきた時、山を切り開いて街道を通した。これが薩多峠であり、東海一の難所であった。しかし、ここの眺めは、「此所富士山鮮やかに見えて、東海道第一の風景なるべし」と名所記のもある通り、ひろびろと開けた駿河湾、沼津から続く曲汀の眼をみはらす景色であったろう。広重の絵でも、左での峠道の断崖の上からこわごわとこの絶景を眺めている旅人を描いている。
この絵は明るく晴々とした気分の絵として佳作である。構図もよく、近景の岩の上の二本の松がきいている。左に高く、右は海上の真帆がこれをうけ、中央に富士山となっている。また色彩も左手の断崖と近景の岩が濃く、大きく海の藍が開け、富士の白さが中心になっていて配色も爽やかである。画題は「薩多嶺」である。この絵は売れ行きがよかったらしく、異版が出来ていて、海上の船を欠いたり、岩の色を簡略したものもある。

※歌川 広重（うたがわ ひろしげ、寛政9年（1797年） - 安政5年9月6日（1858年10月12日）
浮世絵師。江戸の町火消しの安藤家に生まれ家督を継ぎ、その後に浮世絵師となったが 現代広く呼ばれる安藤広重（あんどう ひろしげ）なる名前は使用しておらず、浮世絵師としては歌川広重が正しいと言える。
天保3年（1832年）秋、広重は幕府の行列（御馬進献の使）に加わって上洛（京都まで東海道往復の旅）する機会を得たとされる。天保4年（1833年）には傑作といわれる『東海道五十三次絵』が生まれた。この作品は遠近法が用いられ、風や雨を感じさせる立体的な描写など、絵そのものの良さに加えて、当時の人々があこがれた外の世界を垣間見る手段としても、大変好評を博した。
なお、つてを頼って幕府の行列に加えてもらったとの伝承が伝わるが、実際には旅行をしていないのではないかという説もある[2]。 また、司馬江漢の洋画を換骨奪胎して制作したという説もある。
