An 82-year-old Japanese programmer has told the United Nations in New York about the importance of senior citizens engaging with digital technology.
Masako Wakamiya addressed a conference hosted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs along with Japan's permanent mission to the UN. She began to learn programming only after turning 80 and has created her own smartphone app.

(Masako Wakamiya / Programmer)
"I'd like to speak to you today of how having digital skills is effective for senior citizens to feel empowered and in control of their own lives. I hope you can encourage more seniors to be active members of society."

Wakamiya says technology helps the elderly stay active and allows people to reach out across generations and around the world.
