あやしき賤、山がつも力尽きて、薪さへ乏しくなりゆけば、頼むかたなき人は、みづから家をこぼちて、市に出でゝ賣る。一人がもち出でたる価、一日が命にだに及ばずとぞ。あやしき事は、薪の中に、赤きにつき、薄など所々に見ゆる木、あひまじはりけるを尋ぬれば、すべき方なきもの、古寺にいたりて佛をぬすみ、堂の物の具を破りとりて、割り砕けるなりけり。濁惡の世にしも生れあひて、かゝる心うきわざをなむ見侍りし。

【現代語訳】

また、養和のことだったか、ひさしい昔のことで覚えていないが、二年の間、世の中が飢饉になって、ひどいことが起こった。或は春夏に旱魃、或は秋に大風、洪水など、よからぬことが続いて、五穀がことごとく実らなかった。無駄なことに、春には耕作し夏には苗を植えたが、秋に刈り入れて冬に収納する賑わいは見られなかった。
このため国々の民は、或は土地を捨てて国を飛び出し、或は家を擲って山に住んだ。さまざまなお祈りが始まり、入念な加持祈祷が行われたが、一向そのしるしがない。京の町の習いとして、何事につけても、みな田舎便りだったのだが、その田舎から上ってくるものが絶えてしまったので、そうは平静を装ってなどいられようか。我慢が出来なくなって、様々な財物を片っ端から二束三文で手放すのだが、一向高く評価してくれる人がいない。たまたま交換ができても、財宝は安く見積もられ、粟には高い値段がつけられる。

 一年目は、このようにして、やっと暮れた。二年目は立ち直るかと思っていたところ、さらに疫病まで付け加わり、ますますひどくなって回復の兆しがない。人々はみな困窮しきっているので、それが日ごとに極まっていくさまは、「少水の魚」の喩えのとおりであった。挙句には、笠をかぶり、脚絆を巻き、見苦しくない服装をしたものが、ひたすら家ごとに食を乞うて歩く。このように困りきって呆然としているものどもが、歩いているかと見れば、そのまま倒れて死んでしまう。築地のつらや、路のほとりで、飢え死んだものの数は知れない。死体を始末する方法もないので、異臭が世界に満ち満ちて、腐乱していく形やありさまは、目も当てられないことが多かった。まして、河原などは馬車が行きちがえないほど死体が積み重なった。
卑しい身分の樵たちも力尽き、そのため薪が不足してきたので、生活に困った人は、自分の家を壊して薪にし、それを市に出て売った。一人が持って出た薪の価は、一日の命をつなぐに及ばないという。不審なことに、薪の中に、赤い塗料や薄く延ばした金箔が所々に見える木が混じっている。そのわけを聞くと、ほかに生きるすべのないものが、古寺に入って仏像を盗み、お堂の什器を破りとって、それを割りくだいているのだった。濁悪の世に生まれ合わせて、こんなにもなさけない仕業を見る羽目になったわけであった。

◆（現代語表記：ほうじょうき、歴史的仮名遣：はうぢやうき）は、賀茂県主氏出身の鴨長明による鎌倉時代の随筆[1]。日本中世文学の代表的な随筆とされ、『徒然草』兼好法師、『枕草子』清少納言とならぶ「古典日本三大随筆」に数えられる。

新聞の書評を見て。

【最も印象に残った一行】

中年の恋とトイレは行けるときに行っとけ、である。

年老いて、自分でも気づかないうちに、独善的で不快な人間になっているのではないか。もちろんすべてが、私の人が理由で起こったことではない。

私はそういう断捨離の逆張りをいく父の話を聞き、何とはなしに明るい気持ちになった。たとえ八十過ぎようが九十過ぎようが、意欲とお金があるなら、新しいことを始めたり新しくモノを買ったりするほうが人生楽しいに決まっている。

陰で悪口を言い合うのが、人と人とが心を通じ合わせる一番簡単な方法ではある。

【コメント】

最初は読みながら退屈で逢ったが、読み進むにつれて引き込まれてしまった。主人公の恋人の男が私と同じ年代であり、切実さを感じたが、加齢黄斑変性

という網膜の病気で最後に失明したには驚いた。
