One of Japan's top pitchers has made his debut in Major League Baseball. Masahiro Tanaka of the New York Yankees took his team to a 7-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.
Tanaka gave up a home run in the bottom of the first inning and allowed the Blue Jays to score two runs in the second inning. But he gave up no more runs, retiring three players in each of the fourth to seventh innings. Tanaka's debut game had eight strikeouts and no walks. He allowed six hits.
Tanaka signed a seven-year contract in January. At 155 million dollars, it's the fifth largest amount for a pitcher in MLB history. The 25-year-old right-hander went professional with Japan's Rakuten Eagles in 2007. Last season, he set a Japanese record with 24 wins and no losses..
