The Kyoto Imperial Palace opened to the public for its annual spring showing. People were invited to enter through one of the main gates. Once inside the palace, visitors can see a display of dolls in the living quarters of former emperors.

入公門、鞠躬如也、如不容、立不中門、行不履閾、過位色勃如也、足矍*如也、其言似不足者、攝齊升堂鞠躬如也、屏氣似不息者、出降一等、逞顔色怡怡如也、沒階趨進翼如也、復其位シュクセキ*如也、

【書き下し文】
公門に入るに、鞠躬（きくきゅう）如（じょ）たり。容（い）れられざるが如くす。立つに門に中せず。行くに閾（しきい）を履（ふ）まず。位を過ぐれば、色勃如（ぼつじょ）たり、足カク如たり。其の言うこと、足らざる者に似たり。斉（し）を摂（かか）げて堂に升（のぼ）るに、鞠躬如たり。気を屏（おさ）めて息をせざる者に似たり。出でて一等を降（くだ）れば、顔色を逞（はな）って怡怡（いい）如たり。階を沒（つく）せば、趨（はし）り進むこと翼如たり。其の位に復（かえ）ればシュクセキ*如たり。

【通釈】
孔子が宮廷の御門を通る時には、身をかがめて遠慮がちに通り過ぎた。門の中央を通るような事はせず、敷居を踏む事も無かった。主君の御席の下を通り過ぎる時には緊張した面持ちで小刻みに通り過ぎた。席に着いたらまるで口が利けなくなった様に無言でおられた。主君のお側へ上る時には身をかがめ、朝服の裾を掴んで引きずらないようにした。主君の御前では息をひそめてかしこまった。御用が終わって階段を下る時には、一段ごとに表情が和やかになった。階段を下りて席へ戻るまでは翼を拡げた鳥の様に優雅に歩かれた。席に戻った後は、恭しい態度を保っておられた。

【English】
Confucius was bending himself when he passed through the gate of the palace, like he could not pass the gate. He stood aside at the gate. He never stepped on the threshold. He walked at brisk pace with a strained face when he passed through below the seat of his lord. He spoke little at his seat, like he could not speak. He was bending himself when he ascended near his lord. He lowered his breath in front of his lord, like he could not breathe. His expression got mild every step when he descended steps. His brisk step was graceful like a bird spreading its wings when he returned to his seat. He behaved respectfully at his seat.

全20編（学而第一～堯曰第二十） 構成され、編の名称は各編の最初の二文字を採ったものであり内容上の意味はない。
したがって、学而第一から順に読む必要はなくどこから読んでもかまわない。
