裕福な家に生まれたインド人の青年ガンジーは、ロンドンで法律を学び、弁護士として南アフリカへ渡る。そこで人種差別を目の当たりにし、公民権運動に参加。やがてイギリスに統治されている母国の独立を目指して「非暴力、不服従」をスローガンに、人々を説いていく。偉大なるインド独立の父マハトマ・ガンジーの波乱万丈の生涯をつづり、アカデミー作品賞、監督賞、主演男優賞、脚本賞など８部門を受賞した名作。
