Rescue workers in Hiroshima are still struggling to find people missing in landslides. Record rains fell in western Japan early Wednesday, softening the ground. Several hillsides gave way. Thirty-nine people were killed. Seven others are missing.
Firefighters, police, and Ground Self-Defense Force personnel worked through the night in the debris. The landslides destroyed several homes, and they knocked out power and water to others. So, many people have been forced to move into emergency shelters.
More than 200 millimeters of rain fell in three hours. That's more than the average for the entire month.
Some people are questioning the emergency response. Residents began reporting mudslides around 3:20 AM. Municipal officials issued the first evacuation advisories almost an hour later."
