We begin in Hong Kong, where its leader Carrie Lam has apologized once more for her handling of the territory's contentious extradition bill that led to large-scale protests and crackdowns, saying she has heard the people "loud and clear."

"I personally have to shoulder much of the responsibility. This has led to controversies, disputes, and anxieties in society. For this, I offer my most sincere apology to all people of Hong Kong."
At the news conference on Tuesday, Lam didn't go so far as to say the bill would be withdrawn, but she promised not to put it on the table until the controversy is resolved. She admitted the bill is unlikely to be revived during the current term of the legislative council.
The proposed bill would allow people in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China for trial. Earlier on Saturday, Lam had announced that the bill would be suspended indefinitely.
