Scientists are warning the Arctic may become ice-free during the summer as early as the 2030s.
Their research underscores the impact that greenhouse gas emissions are having on the Arctic.
A team of South Korean and other researchers published their findings on Tuesday in the science journal Nature Communications.
Their prediction is based on simulations that utilize data from 1979 to 2019.
Arctic sea ice typically shrinks during the summer and the fall.
The results of the simulations indicate the ice may completely melt by the month of September as early as the 2030s.
The researchers say if an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate happens, the warming could accelerate.
They also warn that would greatly impact human society and the ecosystem.
