(今日は英語で五條市の「五條源兵衛」を紹介します。日本語版は後ろに掲載しています。)
Gojo City, Nara, is a central city in the southern part of Nara Prefecture. It is on the border with Wakayama Prefecture in the southwestern part of Nara Prefecture, in the Kinokawa River basin. A number of ancient shrines, temples and historic spots remain in Gojo. In such a city, a town which used to prosper as a commercial city and a post town, "Shinmachi" exists. The place is also specified as a Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and many tourists visit there. The most popular restaurant in Shinmachi is the Japanese restaurant, "Gojo Genbei".

The restaurant opened in May 2010 in a renovated 250-year old house. Adding to tables on the earthen floor, there are Japanese rooms with a hori-gotatsu (A kotatsu is a low table with a heater beneath it and covered with a quilt to retain the heat. People sit around it with their legs under the quilt to keep warm during the winter. A hori-gotatsu is a kotatsu with a pit to place your legs so that you do not have to fold your legs.) The food includes vegetables grown with the pride of local farmers, hand-made miso, tofu and Japanese pickles... Enjoy the "local taste" using locally produced soy sauce, etc. You can't miss the tasty local sake (rice wine), either. The restaurant has an English Web site where you can find more photos and information. Akihito Nakatani, the master chef, was introduced in a weekly newspaper of Nara, "Nara Nichi-nichi Shinbun" (September 2014).

《Akihito Nakatani talks about the attractiveness of vegetable. "Freshly harvested seasonal vegetables are really sweet and have rich flavor without any flavoring. They bring energy to every part of our body." About 50 kinds of vegetables delivered from local farmers are cooked, cherishing the original taste of the material. His care about vegetables go as far as to go to the farm on regular holidays to harvest with the farmers. The more he got to know vegetables, the more he became fascinated with the depth of that world. ... "When I went to the field, I learned that it largely depends on the weather, and it may even become impossible to harvest if there is a natural disaster. It is a struggle every day. After learning that, my love for vegetables was deepened." says Mr. Nakatani. Connecting the vegetable producers and the consumers, then, connecting to this local community is his job, he says. Building trust-based relationships with farmers and the local community, he aims to create a local attraction through cooking.》
A restaurant where you can enjoy tasty meals in the atmosphere of "Japan" from the Edo period. I recommend foreign tourists to visit this place as a representative restaurant of the southern part of Nara Prefecture. (translated by Yoshiko Fujiwara)
