【漢文】
司馬牛問君子、子曰、君子不憂不懼、曰、不憂不懼、斯可謂之君子已乎、子曰、内省不疚、夫何憂何懼。
【書き下し文】
司馬牛(しばぎゅう)、君子を問う。子曰わく、君子は憂えず、懼(おそ)れず、曰わく、憂えず、懼れず、斯れこれを君子と謂うべきか。子曰わく、内に省(かえり)みて疚(やま)しからずんば、夫(そ)れ何をか憂え何をか懼れん。
【通釈】
司馬牛(しばぎゅう)が人々の手本たるべき君子について尋ねました。孔子は、
「君子というものは心配や恐れを抱く事は無い。」
と答えられました。司馬牛がさらに、
「たったそれだけで君子と呼べるのですか?」
と尋ねたので、孔子は、
「自らの行いを反省してやましいことがなければ、一体何を心配したり恐れたりする必要があるだろうか。」
と答えられました。
【English】
Si Ma Niu asked about a gentleman. Confucius replied, "A gentleman must not be anxious and afraid." Si Ma Niu asked,"If he is not anxious or afraid, is the person called a gentleman?" Confucius replied, "He has a clear conscience when he reflects on his actions. So he is not anxious or afraid."
『論語』とは
読んで字の如く「論じ語る」、孔子と弟子達や要人達との間に交された対話録。
『論語』は私たちの生き方の原点を見つめた思索の宝庫であり、人間性を磨く叡智が凝縮した永遠の古典。
読めば読むほど胸に深く沁み込む簡潔な言葉の数々。
『孟子』『大学』『中庸』と併せて儒教における「四書」の一つに数えられる。
全20編（学而第一～堯曰第二十） 構成され、編の名称は各編の最初の二文字を採ったものであり内容上の意味はない。
したがって、学而第一から順に読む必要はなくどこから読んでもかまわない。

この種の書名には弱い。
【印象に残った一行】
これは、日本でも同様で、今の子どもたちの多くが、かって家々であたり前のように使っていた鰹節削り器を鉛筆削りと間違え、その鰹節を使う正しい出汁の取りかたさえ知らぬ大人がほとんどになり、高地クメール族の人たちが口々に言っていた「楽で美味い白い粉」に、彼らと同じく頼り切っている。その現状を見るにつけ、とても寂しい気持ちになってしまうのである。先代から受け継いだ知恵や技術は、一度途絶えてしまったならば、二度とよみがえらない宿命にある。だからそれを確実に次の世代に受け継いでいくのが大人の大切な役割ではないのか。今日、義っしゃんに作り方を見せてもらって、作っている野兎の灰燻しも、ここで終わらせてしまっては誠に悔しくて惜しいばかりである。
【コメント】
読後、ずっしりと重量感を感じる久しぶりの本だ。
私も、今家にある電化製品が何もない時代に生きて昔のことをよく知っている。
しかし、私の時代で受け継がれてきた日本の伝統を、子供たちに何一つ伝えていないことに罪悪感を感じている。

【印象に残った一行】
「なあ、深ちゃん・・・」
このときの訴えかけるような表情を、深澤は鮮明に覚えている。
「バットのスイングスピードだってオレは誰にも負けていないよな？振る量だって相変わらずオレが球界で一番だろ？」
深澤は頷いた。
「だからオレは肉体の限界を感じて辞めるんじゃないんだ。でも、巨人軍というチームの流れの中で川上さんが監督を辞めて、そのあとは長嶋だと球団も思っているし、世間の皆さんもそう思っている。ここでオレがもう1年、2年やらせろと言ったら・・・」
一瞬、上を向いた長嶋は吐き出した。
「・・・ガキだよなぁ」
前年オフの川上の”引退勧告”ｋら、葛藤に葛藤を重ねてたどりついた引退の決意に揺るぎがあるわけではない。
ただ、長嶋はプレーヤーとしての自分に対する自信とプライドを失ってバットを置くわけではなかった。そう言いたかったのである。
プロ野球こそ、日本人がいつも見ていた戦後の風景であり、その中心にいたのが長嶋だったのである。
【コメント】
長嶋の巨人軍入団が私が小学2年生、長嶋を応援しながら育った自称長嶋茂雄世代である。
憧れの長嶋と一瞬目を合わせた(錯覚かもしれないが）瞬間をはっきりと覚えている。
昭和49年に某社に入社し宮崎に配属となり、仕事を終えた事務所でTV中継で引退の挨拶を万感の思いで聞いた。
その翌年、監督となった長嶋が率いる新生巨人軍の宮崎キャンプに休日に見学に出掛けた。
ある日、練習を終えて乗り込んだ帰りのバスに一番前の席に坐っていた長嶋監督と目が合ったのである。

Japanese government officials are turning to technology to help control disasters caused by earthquakes. They're looking at circuit breakers that automatically shut down in response to movement, reducing the risk of fire.
Members of an expert panel have been tasked with evaluating the technology. The breakers automatically stop the flow of electricity when they detect strong tremors. The panel has drawn up testing guidelines to determine if the breakers perform correctly. The devices must shut down when there's a strong jolt but keep lights on so people can evacuate.

"Quake-sensitive breakers should be introduced as soon as possible to prevent fires in a massive earthquake, especially in areas with a lot of wooden houses."
A major earthquake struck Kobe, in western Japan, 20 years ago. Government officials estimate that more than 60 percent of the fires that broke out after were caused by electrical appliances.
