  humaneは「人道的な、人情のある、人間味あふれる、慈悲[情け]深い」。

　The society becomes less humane, and in the end, what it means is that people are not there for each other anymore.

　このbe there for someoneは、「（助け[たより]になる存在として）（ちゃんと[しっかり]）いる、（人のために）いてあげる」。

  Second: we must take great care not to set too narrowly or conservatively our definitions of what constitutes good literature.
