  adversaryは「敵、(競技・議論などの)相手、対抗者」。

  "If she can remake herself so thoroughly in just a couple of years, what changes are yet to come? Will she collaborate with Mr. West, her former adversary, as he has said he’d like to do?"

 「彼女がこの数年で完全に自分を変えられるとしたら、今度どんな変化があるだろうか？　かつてひどいことをされたカニエ・ウエストと共演するだろうか？　ウエストもそうしたいと言っている」

  バラク・オバマは2009年4月5日に行った「プラハ演説」で、この語を効果的に使っています。

Such fatalism is a deadly adversary, for if we believe that the spread of nuclear weapons is inevitable, then in some way we are admitting to ourselves that the use of nuclear weapons is inevitable." 　

　「こうした兵器の拡散は防ぎようがない、抑止できない、と主張する人々がいます。究極の破壊兵器をもつ国家や人々は増えていくものであり、私たちはこういう世界に生きる運命なのだ、と。こうした宿命論を振りかざすのは、きわめて有害な敵対行為と言わざるをえません。核兵器の拡散はどうしようもないものと思ってしまえば、核兵器の使用もどうしようもないものとある意味認めることになってしまいます」
