　1月刊行のマイク・バーフィールド文、ジェス・ブラッドリー 絵、『ようこそ！おしゃべり歴史博物館』（すばる舎）も昨日再校ゲラを戻した。

THE MODERN AGE

Humans have simply flown through the past 500 years –　a period that historians call the Modern Age. Not only have　we learned how to fly for real, we have also become　increasingly speedy in everything we do – including populating and polluting the planet.

Today, we can travel, consume and communicate faster than our ancestors could ever have imagined, and we can access information in a flash. But the roots of this rush reach down through kings, queens, conquests, wars, invasions, inventions, inequality and slavery. Getting from the Middle Ages to our Modern Age required new ways of thinking, and this began with the brilliant brains of the Italian Renaissance.

近現代

　歴史家は最近500年を「近現代」と定義するけど、人類はこの500年、飛ぶように駆け抜けてきた。文字通り飛ぶ方法を編み出しただけでなく、地球の人口増加や汚染など、人間がやることなすことは何もかもスピードが増すばかりだ。

　昔は想像もできなかったスピードで今は移動も消費もコミュニケーションも可能だし、あらゆる情報に目にも留まらぬ速さでアクセスする。でも、ここにいたるまでに王も女王も存在したし、征服や戦争や侵略を経験し、発明や不平等や奴隷制もあったことを忘れててはならない。

　中世から現代への移行にあたって、新しい考え方が求められた。その扉をイタリア・ルネサンス期の賢人たちが開いたんだ。
