　中でもJoe Normanの The Super Tutor: The best education money can buy in 7 short chaptersがいちばん参考になる。

　イートン校などの名門に入るために読んでおきたい本を紹介し、それをどう読むべきかが豊富な用例とあわせて実にわかりやすく説明されている。

　本書を読んでいると、イギリス文学、ヨーロッパ文学の成り立ちと歴史も自然と理解できる。

Primary and secondary epic

In Homer’s case – in the case of his two epic poems The Iliad (about the Trojan War) and The Odyssey (about Odysseus’s long journey home afterwards) – his work’s survival is even more remarkable, because Homer was writing at a time when hardly anyone in Europe could read or write. Actually, the poet we call ‘Homer’ is not one but many poets. The events of Homer’s two poems – the war between the Greeks and Troy, and one Greek hero’s journey home to Ithaca – all took place 400 years before Homer wrote them down. And, while these stories were preserved by poets in those 400 years, they were not written down, preserved with pen and ink. No. All these other poets, the ones we call ‘Homer’, had to memorise the words of these two poems – hundreds of thousands of them, over tens of thousands of lines – in order to pass them on to the next generation. The poet we call Homer was simply the first of these dozens, perhaps hundreds of poets, to write these poems down.

原始叙事詩と二次叙事詩

　ホメロスは二篇の叙事詩『イーリアス』（トロイア戦争について）と『オデュッセイア』（その後のオデュッセウスの長い旅路について）を残した。ホメロスのこの二篇の詩が今も生き残っているのは非常に注目に値する。

　西欧人のほとんどが読み書きのできなかった時代、ホメロスにはこれができた。

　実は「ホメロス」と呼ばれる詩人はひとりではない。ほかに何人もいる。

　ホメロスの詩篇に見られるふたつの出来事――ギリシャ人とトロイア人の戦争（『イーリアス』）と、ギリシャの英雄オデュッセウスのイサカへの旅（『オデュッセイア』）――は、どちらもホメロスが書き留める四〇〇年前に起こっている。どちらの物語も複数の詩人たちによって四〇〇年間保存されたが、書き留められたわけではない。ペンとインクで記されたのではないのだ。

　わたしたちが「ホメロス」と呼ぶすべての詩人たちが数十万語、数万行を超えるこのふたつの詩篇を「暗記」し、次世代に伝えたのだ。

　わたしたちがホメロスと呼ぶ詩人は、二篇の叙事詩『イーリアス』と『オデュッセイア』を書き留めた数十人、おそらく数百人の詩人を代表するひとりに過ぎない。

　the firstはこの場合は「最初の」というより、「主要な、いちばん大事な」ということなので、試訳くらいに訳すのがよいと思う。

　いろんな本を読んでみるのが最高の英語の学習法だ。ボキャブラリーを増やせば英語を書くのも話すのも楽になる。
